Transforming Underutilised Farmland into Long-Term Renewable Income

Across rural India, thousands of farming families own land that is difficult to cultivate because of low rainfall, poor soil conditions or limited access to irrigation. Although the land remains an important family asset, it often produces little or no dependable income. Valente NRG created a long-term renewable-energy leasing model that allows landowners to retain ownership of their land while earning recurring income from solar and wind energy projects.

Valuable Land, Limited Income
For many landowners, agriculture depends heavily on rainfall, groundwater availability and changing market conditions. In drought-prone areas, repeated crop failures can make farming financially unsustainable. Selling the land may provide immediate money, but it also removes a valuable generational asset from the family. Farmers therefore needed an alternative that could generate reliable income without requiring them to permanently give up ownership.
A Lease Model Built Around Farmer Security
Valente NRG identified land suitable for renewable-energy development and worked directly with landowners to explain the leasing process, payment structure and long-term benefits. The land was leased for renewable-energy use through legally documented agreements. Ownership remained with the farmers, while Valente NRG coordinated land documentation, stakeholder discussions, developer requirements and project-related infrastructure. This created a balanced model in which developers received access to suitable land and farming families received predictable long-term income.
Creating Value Without Transferring Ownership
The leasing model converted low-yield land into a productive financial asset. Farmers gained recurring income without having to invest in cultivation, irrigation equipment or agricultural inputs. The project also supported renewable-energy expansion, created local employment during construction and improved access infrastructure around participating villages.

From Uncertain Harvests to Predictable Earnings
Before entering the renewable-energy lease programme, participating farmers relied heavily on seasonal rainfall. Some years produced a limited harvest, while other years generated almost no income. The renewable lease changed the role of their land. Instead of remaining unproductive during difficult agricultural seasons, it began generating predictable income every year. For the families involved, the greatest benefit was not simply the payment. It was the ability to retain their land, protect the family asset and create greater financial stability for the next generation.
“Earlier, the income from this land depended entirely on rainfall. Today, the land provides our family with dependable income while still remaining in our name.”
